A MESSAGE FROM THE “CQ” EDITOR:
Marcia Sweeney, CPCU, AIC, ARM, ARe, AIS, CPIW

To all CQ readers,

The Claims Interest Group seminars, the CQ Newsletter and the recently upgraded claims web-site are provided to you for your personal and professional development.

As Editor of the CQ, I would like to see all readers enjoy the full benefits of the educational articles, as well as those addressing personal and career development. We expanded our quarterly newsletter columns to include more on training and development, law and legislative updates, links to claim sites on the internet, and new technologies for claim handling. In addition to the quarterly favorites we provide a host of technical/functional articles that try to cross all lines of business for both property and casualty claims. Our interest group also sponsors quite a few seminars and other networking opportunities throughout the year. The Claims Committee is a “well adjusted” group of professionals who are available to assist you in either your personal or professional development. Check out the committee member profiles and begin to network with claims professionals around the country.

If you enjoy the CQ please let us know what you like and what you would like to read more about. If you have ideas on content or format changes, want to refer an author, or want to write an article yourself, please contact me directly with your ideas. 67% of the articles are written are by your CPCU colleagues!

Each year we publish four CQs. We typically have three technical/functional articles in each CQ and we try to have those articles cross all lines of coverage. We also publish many other claims related, non-technical articles. The purpose of publishing our Claims Quarterly Newsletter is to provide the membership with timely information on emerging claim and legal issues which develop and enhance claim expertise at all levels. Through the CQ we want to: • Achieve a balance of claim technical, claim legal and claim operational articles, • Achieve a balance of property and casualty articles, • Promote claims education, ethical behavior and professionalism, • Provide a forum for networking within the Claims Interest Group and the claim industry, and Support the Society’s programs and initiatives.

If you missed any of the recent CQ articles you can find them right on the CQ tab on the claims interest group web pages or contact me directly for a copy:

Interest Group Newsletter Article Submission Guidelines

Each interest group publishes a quarterly newsletter specific to its field of the insurance industry. Volunteer interest group members serve as editors, and they welcome article submissions from various sources. If you would like to submit an article for publication in an interest group newsletter, here are some general guidelines.

Manuscript Guidelines
  • The CPCU Society follows The Chicago Manual of Style, The University of Chicago Press, Fourteenth Edition, for all its publications.

  • Facts that are not commonly known as well as quotations should be cited in endnote form. We prefer that citations not be extensive.

  • Please indicate all type specifications and subheads on the hard copy of your manuscript. (For example, an underlined word will be italicized; a squiggly underline will be set as bold.) Please also mark the head levels in the margins of the hard copy: H1—head one; H2—head two; H3—head three, etc.

  • Tables and figures should be numbered and titled. Reference should be made in the manuscript to the point of insertion. They can be submitted on separate pages.

  • Include a two- to three-sentence biography of the author(s), and submit photos of the author(s) if available.

  • Authors will be asked to state that the article has not been published elsewhere, and that proper credit has been given where necessary.

  • If you are submitting an article that was published previously, you must obtain written permission to reprint the article from the publication in which the article first appeared. Please attach the reprint permission letter to your article submission. (Reprinted articles should be kept to a minimum.)

File Preparation Guidelines

  • Please submit articles in Microsoft Word, or another word processing program, in addition to the hard copy. Please keep your files as simple as possible.

  • Please be certain that the hard copy you send is of your final text version. If your electronic file and hard copy do not match, we will need to contact you for clarification and that slows down the production process.

  • Please contact the respective editor(s) to whom you will be submitting an article to see if he or she accepts articles via e-mail. (If you e-mail an article to an editor, please mail the editor a hard copy of your article as well.)
